PETITION
To the
U.S. Congress: REPEAL THE HYDE AMENDMENT
Passed
by Congress in 1977, the Hyde Amendment prevents federal funding for
abortion except in cases of rape, incest and life endangerment.
For 30 years, low-income women on Medicaid have been unjustly denied
support for a fundamental part of women’s reproductive health care –
the right to choose and obtain an abortion. Poor women and
working women are especially deeply affected by the funding
restrictions, because a disproportionate number of these women receive
low wages or are unemployed and lack health insurance, as well as face
high numbers of unintended pregnancies. We must ensure that all
women, regardless of socio-economic status, have access to safe and
affordable abortions as part of overall reproductive health care.
The undersigned strongly urge you to repeal the Hyde Amendment because
30 years is enough!

Vicki
Randle, an African American woman, defends choice and discusses the
special issues and concerns in the African American community around
abortion. She describes the situation that led to having an abortion
and the personal cost. Randle is a musician/singer.
Thousands of
women , including Tonight Show musician Vicki
Randle, signed a petition
in a recent issue of Ms.
Magazine declaring they had an abortion. Farai Chideya
talks with Randle about her reasons for signing the declaration. It is
a moving interview
and well worth hearing.
